Fredrick watercolor canvas - problems?

I have finished a watercolor piece on Fredrick canvas. These are especially made for watercolor so that your don't have to mat, frame or glass your work.

They suck.

After all the paint beading problem, lifting up previous wash, etc. Once it is done, you put various coats of appropriate clear varnish spray on to fix the paint. Fine done! Now I notice that the black and dark colours are crackling and could possibly be peeling off (or maybe not. who knows?)

question is, can I use acrylic paint to kind of fix certain areas that have cracks? Also, can I use acrylics texture gel medium to go over the whole thing with some short brush strokes to enhance the flat look? Basically, is the surface compatible with acrylic paint?
after the painting is done, it is sealed with a special spray varnish that they recommend. So it is supposed to be waterproof and you can hang it without glass.

I've heard bad reviews of the watercolor canvas for watercolor paints. Basically, the surface isn't absorbent the way watercolor paper is.

Yes, you can use acrylics on this type of canvas. However, if you've already sprayed a varnish on it you might have some trouble getting acrylics to stick to it but that depends on how thickly you've sprayed and what kind of spray you've used.

Good luck in repairing your painting!

What are good water color brushes?

I was told to go out and buy 'good' watercolor brushes, not crap.

Coincidentally, I have no idea between 'good' and 'crap' watercolor brushes, besides the fact that kid's brands are most likely not 'good'. Obviously, I am a beginner at watercolor.

I need a "12, 4, and a one inch flat" for brushes.

Any clues on what that means and what brands are good, would be great!

Thanks!

Daniel Smith offers some good synthetic bristle brushes called aquarelles, which I use a great deal. I have kolinsky sable brushes that are ten times the cost, but the aquarelles do just as well. http://www.danielsmith.com/products~cat~101~sku~657+900+004~subcat~101201301409.asp

And individual brushes are also available in every size.

Stephen Quiller and Robert Simmons are also good brands.

The numbers refer to the size of the brush, with 0 being the smallest and usually the 12 you are requested to get being a nice large size brush. The 4 would be good for smaller details. The 1" flat is for watercolor washes, where you want to lay down broad strokes of color.

Do not buy camel hair. A round brush should come to a good point when you dip it in water and then shake it away from you in a snapping motion . . . a flat should not split anywhere along the bristle head. For the sizes you are requested to buy you will likely spend $20-35 for four brushes.
